There are a few steps you can take before winter sets in that keep your garage safe from the elements and anything else that may want to seek shelter from the cold. Your garage should be usable all year round so here are some of our favourite ways to prepare a garage for winter.
Windows that aren’t insulated properly can make a garage cold and uncomfortable. If you have a garage door with windows, installing window seals will help to prevent draughts. There is a variety of window seal trims to choose from including e-gaskets, wedge window gaskets and bubble window gaskets. The type you choose will depend on the type of window installed. Sealing your garage windows will help prevent dampness in your garage, but there are other ways to keep your garage dry and protected. Your garage door can let in water during bad weather that settles on the garage floor and cause damp patches. A garage door threshold seal can prevent water inlet by creating a barrier between the bottom of the garage door and the floor. JA Seals recommend a rubber garage threshold seal to weatherproof your garage door. We supply rubber threshold seals that help to close gaps between 15mm, 20mm and 30mm in size. Each seal comes with a strong adhesive sealant that creates a water-tight bond between the threshold seal and your garage floor.
In colder months, rodents and insects often seek shelter indoors and your garage is an inviting spot for small creatures who can chew through boxes and cables. Any gaps in the garage door are potential entry points for unwanted visitors like mice and rats seeking refuge from the cold. At JA Seals, we recommend checking your garage door seals for damage and gaps and replacing any ineffective garage seals with brush strips. Garage door brush strips help to deter small rodents and bugs from entering your garage threshold while acting as a draught excluder. JA Seals supply industry-approved nylon brush strips in varying sizes including 25mm & 50mm and aluminium carriers come in 180°, 90° and 45° variations.
The change of seasons is a good time to check the state of your garage door weatherstripping. Bottom door seals and weatherstripping for garage doors can deteriorate over time and become ineffective at keeping warm air in and cold draughts out. A series of hot summers can dry out the oils in the rubber causing weatherstripping seals to become dry and brittle over time causing cracks and gaps. JA Seals recommend upgrading your worn garage door weatherstripping in preparation for cold weather. Our garage door multi-seals consist of a rubber strip and adhesive tape that can be applied around the garage door to seal a gap of up to 25mm. The weatherstripping tape comes in 3 lengths - a standard 2.5m, 3.7m and 5m for larger garage doors. JA Seals also supply garage bottom door seals if you're looking for a quality draught excluder. The rubber blade is available in 25mm, 40mm and 50mm sizes and when combined with a garage door threshold seal, your garage entrance receives extra protection against the cold.
