A noisy garage door can quickly become a nuisance, especially in autumn and winter when it gets windier, however the good news is that there are actually a few simple but effective solutions to help you fix this. We’ve put together this guide to give you our top tips on how to stop a garage door rattling in the wind.
The reason why your garage door is rattling in the wind is because the pressure from the wind acts like a sail against the panel, pushing it and releasing it, meaning any looseness / ‘play’ in its mechanical parts will likely result in some level of noise.
This could be loose bolts, nuts and screws or worn / loose rollers vibrating when the wind blows, or gaps around the edges meaning there’s a lack of a tight seal between the panel and surrounding structure, allowing it to move and knock against the frame.
Here’s what you can do to prevent this from happening!
One of the first things you can check is whether there are any loose fasteners. To do this, make sure the entrance is fully closed and have a look for any accessible fixings e.g. handle screws, hinge fasteners, etc. If any are loose, tighten those using a screwdriver or spanner until they’re secure however avoid overtightening / forcing them.
Make sure to leave any springs, cables and bottom brackets to a professional as those are typically under quite a lot of pressure and can be dangerous to handle on your own.
If you have a garage door with tracks, the rollers are used to guide it as it opens and closes and the stems are the shafts that attach them to the panel. Any worn or loose stem fittings would be contributing to excessive movement and therefore noise whenever wind pushes against the door.
To see whether this could be the reason why your garage door rattles in wind, look for cracked wheels, bent stems or any other type of visible wear and if you notice excessive play, replacing the loose/worn parts with correctly sized components can help reduce noise. Using nylon rollers instead of steel can also contribute to reducing rattling sounds.
If you notice the panels flexing when the wind is particularly strong it may be worth adding a reinforcement strut to help reduce the movement. This is essentially a horizontal support bar that is fit across the inside of the door and helps the panels resist bending under wind pressure.
You may want to consult with a garage specialist as to whether reinforcement is suitable for your entrance and which strut would work best, plus they’ll also be able to check whether the added weight means any changes need to be made to your spring system.
The easiest and most affordable way to reduce noise if your garage door rattles in the wind is to make sure you’ve got high quality weather seals installed. If there are gaps along the sides or underneath the panel, it’s much easier for it to sway against the wind’s pressure and bang against the brickwork / track.
Installing seals or replacing your existing ones if they’re worn out will stabilise the panel against the frame and dampen the vibrations that happen when wind hits the door. You can use a rubber floor seal for the bottom of the door or, if there’s a larger gap, a threshold seal will help close it and stabilise the panel. To seal the sides, using a multi seal is a great option.
In addition to being a great garage door noise reduction solution, seals will also help stop any draughts, pests and debris from entering.
