If you’ve noticed draughts coming in from the sides of your door or perhaps daylight or rain getting around the edges, the side gaskets may well be the culprit as they are what typically closes the gap between the frame and door keeping pests, debris, dust, water etc. out. We’ve put together this guide to let you know how to seal the sides of a garage door to keep your belongings safe and your space comfortable!
There aren’t too many materials you’ll need for sealing the sides of your garage door as it’s a relatively simple task you can accomplish without any professional experience hence why it only requires a few things. Make sure to have the following handy:
To begin, measure the entire width of each side of the door and use a pencil or marker to mark the correct length on your garage door side gasket. Although both sides will often be the same height it’s still worth measuring both as sometimes there might be ever so slight variation, particularly in older garages.
You can either use tape measure or just hold the gasket against the frame and mark the length directly on the product.
Use a sharp knife of scissors to cut the product to the marked length and aim for a straight, clean cut as this way the weatherstripping will sit flush against the frame without leaving any gaps. If you’re not sure, it’s always better to cut it a bit longer as you can always trim any excess as opposed to cutting it too short.
Make sure the sides of your garage door are clean. It’s best to give them a quick wipe to make sure the adhesive sticks well. Once you’ve done this, apply the adhesive tape along each of the sides aligning it with the frame’s outer edge and then cut to length. Depending on the type of product you’re using you might need to use your own adhesive tape however some products like JA Seals’ multiseal for example come with extra strong adhesive tape included.
Start applying the weatherstripping onto the tape by first pressing one edge onto it and then aligning and applying the entire length along the adhesive. Make sure to apply enough pressure so it’s fixed in place well.
Once you’ve attached the weatherstripping to the door frame using adhesive tape, it can be a good idea to use self-tapping screws to fix it in place for extra security. This might be especially handy for doors that are frequently used or if you’re attaching the product to an uneven surface e.g. rough wood to make sure the hold is fully fail-safe.
The best way to seal garage door sides is by using a multiseal as it’s specifically designed to fit the vertical sides of your door and can typically cover gaps up to 25mm. Garage door multiseals from JA Seals are an excellent option as they come in three different lengths depending on the size of your door and they also come with extra strong adhesive tape and self-tapping screws included for ease.
